Nestled on the banks of the Nile in Jinja, Uganda, the Nyege Nyege Festival is a four-day celebration of music, art, and freedom that draws thousands of revelers from across Africa and beyond. As a two-time attendee, I can attest that Nyege Nyege is not just a festival, it’s an experience that defies conventional description.
The Journey Begins
My adventure started with a feast of a bus ride from Nairobi to Jinja, weaving through the vibrant towns of Kenya. Krackles and soda from JJ from Discovery Nomads, yoghurt and fries at Delamare and ‘rolexes’ , which omelettes on chapatis the thickness of twenty pages of paper (I counted), as we waited to get our passports stamped at Busia. From the rolling hills of Limuru to the bustling markets of Iganga, the journey was an adventure in itself. Each stop offered a glimpse into Kenya’s heartland, and as the bus sped closer to our destination, we got to experience Uganda’s fringetowns. Vendors selling freshly roasted maize to the lively matatu culture, to children walking home from school, none of them knowing that the white bus was headed to the festival of our times.
Travelling with Discovery Nomads, the tour company I’d entrusted with my Nyege Nyege journey, made all the difference. They ensured that everything ran smoothly—arranging comfortable accommodations, prioritizing safety, and even creating a party-like atmosphere on the bus, complete with lively music and icebreakers that turned strangers into friends long before we crossed the border. Their attention to detail set the tone for an unforgettable adventure ahead.
The Wonderland Unfolds
The festival grounds, spanning the iconic Source of the Nile, Jinja Golf Course, and Jinja Showground, transform into a veritable wonderland. Seven stages, each with its distinct personality, host a diverse array of performances. From the main stage’s headliners to the eclectic Hakuna Kulala stage, there’s something for every musical taste.
Fashion and Freedom
Nyege Nyege doubles as an open-air fashion show. Attendees don everything from bohemian-inspired outfits to avant-garde costumes, embracing a freedom of expression rarely found elsewhere. This sartorial extravaganza adds to the festival’s vibrant atmosphere.
Musical Highlights
The 2023 edition featured unforgettable performances. Jemimah Sanyu delivered a powerful set while visibly pregnant, embodying the festival’s spirit of resilience. Groovy Jo, a Kenyan femcee, made her Nyege debut alongside Boutross with his smash hit ‘Angela’. The Tanzanian ‘singeli’ duo, Queen Asher & Rehema Tajiri, showcased the future sound of Dar Es Salaam. It’s only at Nyege where you’ll access future stars whilst they are on the up and up.
However, the highlight for many was Sho Madjozi’s electrifying performance. Her infectious energy and ever-evolving fashion sense, (she wore a colourful poncho that later turned into a skirt mid-performance) captivated the audience, demonstrating how Nyege Nyege can be a launchpad for international success, and in her case coming back to her roots. Her first performance in 2019 wasn’t as well-attended as this one, but many hits later, the crowd knew her songs word for word.
Beyond the Music
Nyege Nyege is more than just concerts. The artisan market offers a platform for local craftspeople to showcase their wares, from vanilla pods to handmade jewelry. This aspect of the festival provides crucial economic opportunities for the local community. It also allows you to purchase mementos that you will probably remember for life.
Challenges and Charm
Like any large-scale event, Nyege Nyege has its challenges. Muddy grounds after rain, crowded dance floors, and the occasional logistical hiccup are part of the experience. However, these elements often add to the festival’s charm, creating shared experiences and stories among attendees.
